What are jinxes, hexes, and curses? How can you tell if you’ve been jinxed, hexed, or cursed? And if you have been, what can you do about it?
All of these are terms for spells intended to inconvenience, damage, or harm a specific target. Some are cast accidentally, while others are more powerful and cast with full intention.
Summary:
A jinx is the lightest of the three — a form of malevolent magick where the subject gets bad luck, minor misfortunes. It’s simple, nasty, but isn’t meant to seriously harm someone. It usually only lasts a little while.
A hex is a form of malevolent magick more powerful than a jinx. It lasts longer and can be “broken” when it reaches its “death date”, or the subject learns their lesson.
A curse is the most powerful of the three. If done well it can last a lifetime — and beyond. Curses can be cast on a person or family and can last thru generations. At the very least, until atonement is made for compelling the curse. Alternatively, the one who cast the curse can simply take the steps to remove it.

Jinxes are commonly mean-spirited spells cast by accident, without a conscious decision to work magick or a spell. One example is that jinx we used to say as kids, “I’m rubber, you’re glue. Whatever you say bounces off of me and back to you.” They’re the least serious form of malevolent work and are often seen as more of a nuisance than a real threat to our wellbeing. Like a small blast of negative energy sent in a fit of anger, envy, or jealousy causing minor annoyances that are temporary — a miniature form of karma, which can also be tied to the personal superstitions of the target.
Jinxes are short-term, although you can set a specific time of duration before casting one.
Examples of a jinx:
Cause the target to…
- •get a flat tire
- •trip over their shoelace
- •step in a puddle rather than over it
- •develop a minor headache
- •forget their lines in a play

Hexes are the in-between stage, stronger than jinxes but weaker than curses, intentionally sent to a target in order to harm them.
They have the ability to cause damage to physical or mental health, a love life and personal relationships, financial stability, luck, or personal belongings (e.g., car, computer). They’re useful when someone continues to do wrong, and you need them to change.
These spells will send negative energy towards your target that last as long as your set intention. They’re like a temporary curse — a series of misfortunes or extremely bad luck impacting one or more areas of the target’s life.
A hex is generally set for a specific duration of time, such as seasonal, or stops working when the target learns their lesson.
Examples of a hex:
- •a seasonal hex to alienate the target’s friends and family
- •make someone regret leaving you
- •make it difficult for a cheater to find love
- •to cause the target who’s been abusing you (verbally, mentally, physically) to make critical mistakes which publicly reveal their actions and words for the cruelty and manipulation they truly are

Unlike jinxes (and possibly hexes) that may be cast unintentionally thru channeling strong emotional energies, curses are the most dangerous and malevolent in practicing magick, and generally cast on abusers or someone who made life a living hell. They’re always purposefully cast and something to be concerned about — a heavy blast of negative energy intended to harm and destroy an enemy, and can be placed on a person, family, place, whatever.
A curse may cause bad luck so intense it puts the target’s life in jeopardy, causes a sickness that threatens their livelihood, destabilizes their personal relationships, job, or housing to the point of leaving them completely destitute.
Curses can last from a few months to a few years, or a lifetime if left unbroken or not given a “death date” — to the point that some curses can last for generations.
Curses on this scale can be difficult to achieve, making them fairly scarce. Regardless, I can’t stress this enough — a curse should not be attempted if you don’t know what you’re doing, and NEVER cast lightly. Curses can also have repercussions. No, I’m not talking about the “rule of three”. But common sense says casting something intended to cause someone’s downfall may come at a price.
On the flip side to that, my personal belief (and one I practice) is if you’re not the one throwing shit out there you don’t need to worry about ‘repercussions’ to any casting you’re doing. Karma’s a bitch — who’s to say what you’re casting isn’t the target’s karma?
Two different forms are: (1) the type of curse which impacts all areas of their life, but not so severely (blanket of negativity), and (2) one that brutally strikes a specific aspect of their life.
Examples of a curse:
- •to trap someone in a life of loneliness
- •to make the target feel hopeless to the point of self-harm, regardless of any positivity in their life
- •to make the one who hurt you feel the same hurt (or worse) thru their family and/or loved one(s)
How Do I Know If I've Been Hexed or Cursed?
While every case is different, there are some common signs that may indicate you are on the receiving end of some nasty magick.
Remember, everyone has a bad day, week, month, or even year on occasion, and not all bad luck or bad situations are caused by malevolent spells. Similarly, no one of these signs alone is an indication that you are hexed or cursed. You could have one or two of these and be totally fine.
What you need to pay attention to is the intensity of these signs, as this should indicate which you are dealing with. Curses come on stronger, are more dramatic, and last longer than a hex.
Some common things to look out for:
- Bad Luck: When it comes to bad luck, I’m not talking about you ran out of gas, got a flat tire, broke the zipper on your favorite jeans, or even your senior pet “suddenly” dying. I’m talking unusual things that seem to come out of nowhere, especially multiple unusual things all at once. It will also seem like more than just a rough patch – it may feel like the world is suddenly out to get you.
- Nightmares: Folks who are suffering from malevolent magickal or psychic attack often report having nightmares. This could be for a couple of reasons: (1) the nightmares may be an intended effect of the spell to disturb your sleep, (2) the nightmare may be your subconscious attempting to alert you that something is wrong.
Often our subconscious mind picks up on subtle shifts in energy before our conscious mind does, so it may try to warn you through your dreams. Pay special attention to dreams where you are being attacked or harmed, or your space is being invaded. A common sign that signals an attack is a dream that someone has broken into your home and is harming you. On the flip side, a dream that someone is unsuccessfully attempting to break into your home may reveal that someone is trying to get passed your magickal defenses but hasn’t managed it yet.
Also pay attention to who is trying to break in or harm you in your dream, as well as any identifying symbols around them. For instance, the person attacking you may be a vicious beast of some sort but wearing the jacket of someone you know who has a grudge against you.
- Sudden death of houseplants or pets: An early sign of heavy malevolent magick being sent your way is the sudden unexplainable death of house plants. Notice I said “unexplainable.” If you forget to water them for six weeks and they die, that’s not a sign, that’s neglect. However, if you’re relatively good with plants and they’re thriving one day and dead the next without any logical reason, you may be facing some nasty spell work. In extreme cases, you may experience the sudden death of pets. Again, sometimes pets die unexpectedly — this is very sad, but normal. ‘Tho if it’s accompanied by other signs, you may want to address the issue sooner rather than later.
- Sudden or unexplained illness: Always see a doctor if you feel like you’re having a mental or physical health issue. However, should you have a sudden onset of illness (either mental or physical), and the associated professionals can’t seem to find a cause, you may need to consider that the issue is magickal rather than mundane.
- Out of step with time: When hexed, it’s possible to feel like you’re out of step with time — feeling “off”. This may manifest as obstacles creating sudden and unusual lateness, as well as routinely finding yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
- Protective charms or wards breaking: If your special bracelet or necklace you never take off that keeps away evil suddenly breaks, or a charm that you hung up in your house for protection falls down, or your prayer candle for protection cracks, it could be a sign that something has overpowered or gotten past your protective measures.
What Should You Do If You Suspect You’ve Been Hexed Or Cursed?
- •Stay calm. Losing your shit or frozen in fear will only rob you of your personal power.
- •Work some divination yourself or reach out to someone you trust to find out what’s happening and determine what’s necessary to fix it.
- •Put your Protection Magick into use. The proper herbs, oils, and more can remove malevolent magick, as well as work reversals, uncrossing, cleansing, and healing — depending on what type of magick is being worked against you.
Be magickal, y’all!
